The Power of Music

Sep 12, 2022

We All Love it!

Music, we all listen to it. There are many different genres of music, from R&B to Rap to Gospel to Alternative Rock and so many more. Music sometimes gets us through our highs and our lows in life. It plays a big part in our lives. But did you know that music is the only thing that can enter your soul without permission?

What Does it Do?

So what is music? By definition, music is “vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.” If music is the only thing that can enter your souls without permission and it’s someone’s or a group of peoples expression of emotion then that means that the expression of that song and the meaning behind it is entering your soul, it can and will change your mood as well based on the type of music it is. That is the reason why there are different genres of music. Certain types of music will make you feel a certain type of way without you knowing. Why do you think there’s such thing as a love song?  It’s supposed to provoke feelings of being in love or loved. Even in gospel music, there are some songs that make you hyper and want to dance your feet off and there are some songs that pull you into a place of intimate worship or praise.

What Are You Listening To?

The type of music you hear is very important as a believer of God and Christ Jesus. You must protect your ear gates and by doing that you have to be aware of what type of music you listen to.  The Bible says, "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." James 4:7 that means even your ears. Submit what you hear to the Lord "and give no opportunity to the devil" We should not give the enemy the opportunity to enter in through what we listen to. Praying without ceasing is very important and listening to gospel or worship music will encourage you to stay in a posture of praying and worshiping constantly.

Consider This…

Also, another important thing to consider about what you listen to is that your music affects your language and your speech. Out of the heart, the mouth speaks, so if your heart is constantly filled with profanity and lust from your music you will speak things filled with profanity and lust. What I mean by this is, if you’re listening to music with a lot of cursing in it then you will curse or feel the need too and it will give you a negative vocabulary. If all your music speaks of is lust, it will give birth in your mind to lustful thoughts. You see music has a big effect on you so we must be careful. The Bible says, "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body." 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 What are you allowing in his temple? Furthermore, the type of music you listen to can even have an effect on your day. Try starting your day with some gospel music and see how much your attitude is throughout the day. It doesn’t even just stop there, try to listen to gospel music or worship music all day and see how your attitude is. I guarantee your day will be better.

Let’s Be Accountable!

We must be accountable and more aware of what we’re listening to. It is extremely vital to protect those ears of yours, so be mindful about everything you are hearing and even seeing in music videos as well. Music is very impactful and inspiring. When you look at your playlist ask yourself, what does this inspire me to do?  Am I inclined to worship or am I inclined to the things of the world?
